Having had one of my staff recently develop a rostering system, called Elvanto, to help churches globally to become super- efficient, this following article about the success of a business online rostering system caught my attention….

‘THERE are about 90 staff working across six Subway restaurants on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast and Subway owner Jason Sandford-Bell was looking to gain control of a spiraling wages bill.

Having attempted a paper-based system and Excel spreadsheets to try to determine costs, Mr Sandford-Bell was no closer to an accurate forecast.

“We were using a fairly complicated Excel spreadsheet, which was all done by the managers individually on the computer system at the stores,” Mr Sandford-Bell said.

“One of the problems was it was taking a manager up to an hour to be able to get the roster correct because it was a fairly cumbersome way of doing it.”

And there was no way of confirming if staff members were available for a shift other than what was written on an availability book. “It was quite slow and time-consuming, and it really just failed in its accuracy on a regular basis,” he said.

Mr Sandford-Bell searched the internet, spoke to other franchisees, as well as head office group Subway Systems Australia, which recommended web-based employee scheduling and rostering solution Roster with ROSS. The program was developed by South Australian company Zarloc.

“We started looking into it and did a trial run and it was immediately clear how successful it was compared with what we were doing, and how it would help longer-term.”

Mr Sandford-Bell said the program was the most user-friendly for staff, with on-call and email support as well as systen training provided. It was rolled out across all six Subway stores about seven months ago.

“The staff can log on from anywhere, with their own log-on details, to put their availability down,” he said. “They can view the roster online and they receive it via email.”

Mr Sandford-Bell said store managers were able to see exactly what their roster costs would be for the week. “They put the percentage into the program that we want to achieve, they start allocating shifts, which are all hourly-based, because they have got the hourly rate for the staff member in, and it calculates an hourly cost, daily cost and then a weekly cost. It means we can hit a percentage very accurately, which we never used to be able to with the Excel spreadsheet.”

Mr Sandford-Bell said the ROSS system could link with Subway’s point-of-sale program.

“It gives you a guideline of how many staff you should have on — so it helps you to roster your system based on your previous sales from the year before.”

At the close of a week, ROSS exports time and attendance data to accounting packages. Mr Sandford-Bell said it now took a manager just three to five minutes to complete a roster, which was delivered via email and SMS.

He said the group was able to aim for a set percentage of 25 per cent of total sales per store collectively allocated to wages.

“Using this program, we can hit that percentage every week and we have shaved close to five to six per cent off our wage bill from this time last year,” Mr Sandford-Bell said.

He expects to save between $90,000 and $130,000 in reduced wages for the year.

“A lot of our staff are Gen Y and they are really adept at being online and used to being on the internet, so this isn’t a burden for them, they actually quite enjoy it,” Mr Sandford-Bell said.

The ROSS system is priced per roster, with free upgrades. Mr Sandford-Bell pays about $7-$8 per weekly roster for six stores, plus an administration roster. He is invoiced monthly and pays up to $220 a month.

“Plus any little upgrades that we wanted they did for us, and they were able to adapt the program to make it even better for us.”

Mr Sandford-Bell next plans to trial a new addition to the ROSS system with a “clocking on” style program for staff members.

CASE STUDY: SUBWAY

The problem: The company lacked tools to accurately forecast labour costs. It needed a faster way to confirm staff availability and produce rosters.

The process: Web-based employee scheduling was introduced, and rostering system Roster with ROSS, developed by Zarloc.

The result: Labour costs are down by between $90,000 and $130,000 a year. Shift information is delivered by email and SMS.’

My family and I dined out in a restaurant in Sydney last week. On the menu was a metre of pizza. And the very next morning the restaurant was featured in The Sydney Morning Herald.

Here’s why…

‘From his radio earpiece to the palm pilot in his hand, George Gevas is the epitome of the thoroughly wired waiter.

When he greets diners at Darling Harbour’s Criniti’s Southern Italian restaurant, he can chat to the chef through his headset and lead customers to tables complete with computer tablets which allow them to choose their drinks and meals before he’s handed them a menu.

The touchscreen is replacing the human touch in restaurants across Sydney. From Quay Restaurant, which has its 400-bottle wine list on the restaurant’s iPad, to North Sydney’s Mondo Global Tapas where the 15 iPad menus have proved particularly popular with solo dinners and parents with children, technology is transforming the restaurant experience…

…technology for waitstaff and chefs is changing at such a rapid rate that training is becoming an important part of the recipe for a successful restaurant, according to Michel Laroche, a hospitality teacher at TAFE’s Western Institute in Orange, which trains more than half of the NSW restaurant staff.

‘It’s not just tapping in who wants what for dinner these days – technology is playing an increasingly important role in collecting demographics about diners to help restaurateurs know things like their customer’s food preferences and birthdays…it’s utterly changing the relationship between kitchen and the diner,’ he said.

…Rock pool’s Neil Perry, who has installed a video link between his Sydney and Melbourne kitchens to watch service in his restaurants and is planning to use iPads to train his service staff.’

All part of the new recipe for technological and future business success.

Source: The Sydney Morning Herald

What we thought impossible in the past is being changed with every new twist and turn that the online world takes, particularly as it undergoes an increased state of metamorphosis and extends the boundaries of possibilities that the Internet provides forward thinkers.

Now as the following article reveals – not everybody will agree with some of the developments. But the fact is this. The way we did things in the past are continuing to change at an alarmingly fast rate – whether we like it or not – even in the medical world.

‘More and more British websites are offering medical consultations and medication most countries only allow during in-person visits…

The websites don’t handle serious problems or emergencies and don’t deal in drugs people could become addicted to.

The European Commission does not monitor such medical websites but is working on a paper addressing the legal issues of tele-medicine.

In countries including Canada, Denmark, Germany and France, doctors are allowed to treat patients online only if they have previously seen them in person.

In the United States, several companies offer online medicine, but patients must typically speak to a doctor on the telephone or set up a video-conference for a live chat.

The British websites typically charge from about $A14 to $A34.

Some even ship a very small percentage of their drugs abroad; in Europe, it is legal for medication to cross borders as long as it is for personal use.

Dr Patrick Cadigan, a spokesman for Britain’s Royal College of Physicians, said it was particularly difficult to make a diagnosis without seeing a patient in person.

‘To lose personal contact with your patients means you lose clues about what may be wrong with them,’ he said.

‘I am concerned these websites could be steering patients to treatments for a financial incentive and not for their own good.’

However, on one prominent website in London the site’s medical director says that patients give a medical history, and are asked about other drugs they’re on to avoid any dangerous interactions.

On his website, they can also upload pictures of a problem.

Doctors then diagnose the condition, and if appropriate send out drugs in the mail.

“Refuse good advice and watch your plans fail; take good counsel and watch them succeed.” - Proverbs 15:22

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. There is no focus! I often say – if you chase two rabbits, they will both escape.

When I assist businesses (and not-for-profit organizations) these days, I take them through a 4 to 5 hour planning process that asks these questions. From their answers we develop an actionable plan.

Here is the process you can apply:-

Where do you want to be in three years?

Do you want to grow by 10%, 30%, double your size, expand nationally or Internationally, even sell?

I will not accept “I want to stay where I am” – why?

1. They will soon move backwards and go out of business due to inevitable cost increases and loss of customers.
2. They will not action the plan anyway.
3. There will be no momentum, leading to complacency and eventually the organisation will die.

What are the barriers to achieving where you want to be in three years?

When you can list the barriers, then you will be able to start writing actions to address these. Later in this article we will deal with actioning these.

Vision – what is your vision?

Examples:

“To be the most loved and respected coffee company in the world.”
- Gloria Jean’s Coffees

“We desire to create an automobile culture of putting customer first via developing human–centered and environment–friendly technological innovation.”
– Hyundai Motor Company

“That every Australian has the opportunity to access trusted Christian media and resources that connect faith to life”
– United Christian Broadcasters Australia

Vision keeps you focussed – both good things and bad things will come along to take you away from where you want to go.

Note: The higher and larger the vision the more creative you need to become to achieving it.

Under Vision set your…

Mission Statement –

This is your statement of purpose it fleshes out the vision and makes it plain.

Examples:

“We are committed to serving you, our guests, with the consistently highest quality coffee and outstanding personalised service in a vibrant store atmosphere..”
- Gloria Jean’s Coffees

“Our ambition is to provide our customers with the widest range of home improvement products at the lowest prices everyday, backed with the best service.”
– Bunnings Warehouse

“UCB is passionately committed to building communities of mature Christians through engaging media and resources”
– United Christian Broadcasters Australia

And your…

Values -

The things you want to represent, and what you believe in as a company.

Example:

• Safety and the Environment
• Integrity
• High Performance
• Win-Win Relationships
• The Courage to Lead Change
• Respect for Each Other – BHP Billiton

Are any of us going to be perfect in these? No – but it reflects how you want to operate and helps you work towards it.

Tip:- Look up other websites for their vision, mission and values statements.

Do your S.W.O.T. Analysis

Strengths Weaknesses
Opportunities Threats

Divide an A4 sheet into four quarters. Title each section with the four categories and complete for your organisation- ask valued staff, clients and external friends for input.

Look at your Marketing

Get all examples of the marketing you do now including stationery. Have a look at how your company or brand is looking to the market.

Look at your Structure

Draw up the current structure of your company. Who reports to who? Warehousing, office space, location etc. (as it applies).

Now to the Actions

Draw up a list of actions with the following headings

ITEM DETAIL BY WHO? BY WHEN?

Review all previous headings and the information you have listed under each. What needs to change to achieve the vision set? Brainstorm creative solutions for the obstacles, weaknesses and threats. Assign tasks and dates.

Look at everything

Staff Structure – Training, Reviews, Future employment needs

Warehouse – Stock, Buy Prices

Pricing – Sell Prices

Marketing – All Materials inc. websites and stationery.

Review Costs – Telephones, loans, travel, insurance etc.

o You may want to get an outside person to help with planning
– they can bring out crucial things you might miss.
o Make sure you are not nominated to do most items on the list.
Involve your staff – or employ outside help in specific areas.
o Some items may involve several steps to achieve.

The Future is Out There!

Once you start actioning your plan, you will start to see focus and momentum. There will be bottom line savings, improved cashflow and many other benefits.

The key to this process is making sure your staff (in business or not-for-profit) buy into the vision. Make sure you employ people who want to be part of the journey, not just do the job.

A business or organization run with real purpose by people who believe in what they are doing can go places never dreamed possible.

In celebration of being appointed on February 1st as the new CEO of OE Design – The Web Designers, Ben Sinclair is wanting to give something back to the community.

Having been with the company since its inception in October of 2003, Ben, now 20 years of age, has just been appointed as the new CEO of ‘OE Design – The Web Designers ‘.

‘One of the key things that we have always done as a company’ Ben said, ‘is to look for ways in which we can help charities, churches, and sporting bodies to use the power of the internet to communicate their message online.’

‘In addition to providing website services for local and national businesses, we continue to provide websites for voluntary organizations both in our own nation and in nations around the world. One such organization is based in Nigeria, where we have created a website for a group that is training up young men and women to be leaders in their region.’

Ben adds, ‘With the internet there are no borders and no restrictions to the possibilities that can be achieved.’

So right now we want to offer a FREE website and six months FREE web hosting for a local sporting club here on the Gold Coast. All they have to do is go to our website www.oe-design.com and provide their contact details or call us on 1300 736 764 and from all those who apply we will then be choosing one applicant.

Closing date for applications is February 28th, 2010.

“THE AWESOME POWER OF LIST BUILDING”

Peter Sinclair : Hello everybody. Today it is my great privilege to have with me the man who international best selling author and radio talk show host, Mike Litman, recently nicknamed “The Tony Robbins of Internet Marketing.” His name is Joel Christopher – Director and Owner of www.SuccessAccess.com and www.MasterListBuilder.com. Joel is a consummate entrepreneur who wants to share his passion for self-employment with others because of the time freedom it offers. Welcome Joel.

Joel Christopher : Hi Peter and everyone. Thanks for that great introduction. I am very pleased to be on this live chat with all of you.

(Editor’s Note: Mike Litman was featured in Seminar 2.)

Peter Sinclair : Hi Joel. That is quite a recommendation coming from Mike Litman. I also understand that Randy Gilbert of “The Inside Success Show” called you “The Michael Jordan of Internet List Building.”

Joel Christopher : They are certainly wonderful accolades. I hope the information that I share today lives up to them!

Peter Sinclair : I’m sure it will. I can hardly wait to get started. Are you ready to jump right into it?

Joel Christopher : Sure.

Peter Sinclair : Joel, in your latest book you stated something I found extremely interesting. You said that in 2002, three of the pioneers of internet marketing, Jonathan Mizel, Stephan Mahaney and Corey Rudl were asked: “If there were a fire in your office, what one thing would you make sure to take with you as you headed out the door?” All of them agreed they would take their subscriber list. That is, their database of “opt-in” email addresses. That was the one thing that all of them said would be most devastating to lose. What are your views on this?

Joel Christopher : Yes. I remember that day in October. I was in Hawaii with them for the Internet Lifestyle Summit. I agree with them 100%. All successful internet marketers would agree that your money is in your list and that your business is built upon your valuable customer and prospect list.

Peter Sinclair : It’s that important, huh?

Joel Christopher : It certainly is. In fact, another millionaire businessman told me that if you took away his million-dollar business but left him with his mailing list that he will have his million-dollar business rebuilt in six to twelve months.

Peter Sinclair : That is a powerful statement!

Joel Christopher : Indeed it is. I can honestly say Peter that the lifeblood of my business, and any business for that matter, online or offline, is the LIST.

Peter Sinclair : So Joel, on the internet, you are famous as the man with THE list, what did you do to be branded as “the masterlistbuilder.” Everywhere I go on the web your name keeps popping up and you’re always connected with the fact that you’re the guy that tripled your database in no time flat. How did that all come about? Can you take us right back to the beginning and share with us some highlights of your journey?

Joel Christopher : The MasterListBuilder brand name came about when one of my clients interviewed me on a live tele-seminar. He started that name when he called me the “MasterListBuilder.” Right at that moment I went to www.godaddy.com and saw that the domain name was available. At that point I took the challenge of increasing my list from 10,000 to 20,000 in 90 days.

Peter Sinclair : That’s a 100% increase in just three months.

Joel Christopher : I announced it to my existing subscribers on Oct 3 and, lo and behold, Peter, the steps I took actually tripled my list to more than 30,000 in only 99 days.

Peter Sinclair : Wow! Now, having built and grown your opt-in list to more than 120,000 subscribers in just 3 years, what can someone do to build their own targeted email list quickly and massively and GUARANTEE themselves instant profits every month?

Joel Christopher : I had five people who volunteered to be coached by me at the end of 2001. I made the guarantee to help them build their opt-in lists to 5,000 in 6 months after going through a twelve week coaching program with me. The system I laid out and tested was the birth of my 12-step MasterListbuilder system. People can read all about this at www.masterlistbuilder.com.

Peter Sinclair : So, in effect, you set up a structure. What about the speed factor?

Joel Christopher : One of the ways I showed them to increase their list FAST was by applying what I call the concept of co-opetition.

Peter Sinclair : That sounds interesting. Can you explain what that is?

Joel Christopher : What I mean is co-operation with your competition. You can do that by finding people who are aiming at the same target market but don’t have directly competitive products. After that you create a system to help each other build a list.

Peter Sinclair : Very interesting. Can you use a concrete example to show what you mean?

Joel Christopher : Sure. A perfect example of what I’m talking about is a project I’m doing with eight other marketers. You can see this at www.WinWinWin.MasterListBuilder.com. The eight publishers agree to participate in a contest to reward subscribers for joining other members of the co-op. That’s one example. Another example I have is a project I just did with Dr. Joe Vitale who also has a relatively large list.

Peter Sinclair : So, you provide ample motivation and plenty of it?

Joel Christopher : Yes Peter. Between Joe and I, in just a matter of days, we generated a sub-list of some 1,300 subscribers merely from doing one joint venture tele-seminar. What it amounts to, in essence, is rewarding people to subscribe to other publishers’ eZines.

Peter Sinclair : Now that brings us to your fantastic book. I’d like to ask you a few questions about it, if you don’t mind.

Joel Christopher : I’d love to answer any questions about my book.

Peter Sinclair : I’m referring, of course, to “Mining Online Gold with an Offline Shovel.”

Joel Christopher : Go right ahead Peter…

Peter Sinclair : Throughout the book you use the terms “clicks” and “bricks” quite prominently. Can you explain the difference between the two terms and then the importance and interrelation of those two terms in the development of a large database?

Joel Christopher : Clicks pertain to the “online” stuff whereas “bricks” pertain to the offline promotions. For example, the way I built my HOT list of high-ticket item buyers is by using offline bricks or what I call “shovels.” Let me explain what I mean. I have a subscriber list of about 300 people whom I have met offline at seminars or gatherings. This small list alone bought more than $250,000 worth of products/services from me last year. I generated them OFFLINE (bricks) but I sold them ONLINE (clicks). That’s the correlation. I also use postcards to build stronger bonds and relationships with my list.

Peter Sinclair : So offline…you’re talking about seminars, newspaper advertising, tele-seminars and a whole list of other strategies? What are some others?

Joel Christopher : I even phone them when they purchase a certain amount. As you would know, Peter, most internet marketers shun the telephone. In contrast, I love using the telephone in building relationships with my list. That’s why I offer FREE weekly tele-seminars live to my list.

Peter Sinclair : Joel, just getting back to postcards… what strategy do you use to capture not only their email address but more? I guess what I am asking is how much detail do you need?

Joel Christopher : Mostly I get the information I need from webcards, business cards… that sort of thing. Everything I do is geared towards building the list, most especially building, enhancing and strengthening the RELATIONSHIP with list members.

Peter Sinclair : You mentioned webcards, can you tell us more about them?

Joel Christopher : Even better than that I can direct people to www.web-cards.com or to www.vistaprint.com where you can create your own webcards. People can email me at webcards@successaccess.com for more information if they wish.

Peter Sinclair : Thanks Joel, if I am following this correctly, what you have actually done is come out of the shadows and the impersonal nature of the internet and put a voice and a face to yourself. Would that be right?

Joel Christopher : Yes Peter. I put a voice, a face and most importantly, a PERSONALITY to internet marketing. I call it AUTO-HUMANIZATION which is basically automation with humanization. Just to explain a bit further… automation pertains to the technology – such as the website, email, autoresponder etc and humanization is the human touch.

Peter Sinclair : Can you explain how you utilize your concept of “Auto-Humanization” to profit from your list handsomely?

Joel Christopher : One example would be to send buyers a THANK YOU postcard through the normal mail for purchases made. I would do that in addition to a thank you email. My customers are so impressed with that they just love it! It makes you unique because no one else does it. Also, if they purchase a high-ticket item from me, I personally thank them on the telephone. What impresses a lot of people is that I have my toll free phone number in every email or eZine I send because I encourage my list members to talk with me.

Peter Sinclair : You are certainly very contactable.

Joel Christopher : Yes, I feel that it is important. The net is a cold environment. You need to keep your list members warm.

Peter Sinclair : You are saying, therefore, that contactability and the personal touch adds up to a lifetime of customer loyalty.

Joel Christopher : That’s how they get to know you, like you and then TRUST you.

Peter Sinclair : Trust!

Joel Christopher : That’s the bottom line Peter. It’s all about TRUST.

Peter Sinclair : Joel, one of the most important things that I want to ask you is what is the greatest driving force that has enabled you to amass such a large database is such a short period of time?

Joel Christopher : I did that by speaking in seminars, offline. Last year alone, I spoke at 15 seminars within 13 months. What I did OFFLINE translated into a lot of branding online. That was the driving force.

Peter Sinclair : That would certainly add to your credibility too. Is that right?

Joel Christopher : Right. For me to build my list and thus my business is internal more than external.

Peter Sinclair : Can you expand on that a bit?

Joel Christopher : Sure Peter. Eleven years ago, I sat down and wrote my mission statement and vision statement. I did that after reading Steve Covey’s book called “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.” This was further developed after going through Tony Robbins’ “Life Mastery” program.

Peter Sinclair : Are you prepared to share with us what that mission statement was or is it too personal?

Joel Christopher : Not at all Peter. In fact, I am happy to tell you. My mission is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. My vision is to send 50 poor kids from my hometown in the Philippines to school over the next 50 years that I expect to live. So far I’ve started with about seven of them and two have graduated from accounting school. By building my list and my business I will realize my mission of helping many others and also I will have the wherewithal to send poor kids to school through college. My book is actually funding my educational foundation so I like it when people love reading my book. It helps me make a difference in two ways. Credibility is important to me Peter.

Peter Sinclair : Thank you for sharing that with us. Would you agree that what you are doing is what Robert Allen and Mark Victor Hansen call “an enlightened millionaire’s goal and mission?”

Joel Christopher : Yes but the overwhelming feeling is more of contribution to a greater number of people.

Peter Sinclair : Do you believe that the vehicle of the internet will allow you to achieve your goals faster?

Joel Christopher : Undoubtedly. It is the fastest vehicle we have.

Peter Sinclair : Do you believe in mentors?

Joel Christopher : Yes Peter. Mentors are definitely important. I think you already know that I have partnered with Ted Nicholas, the famous copywriter.

Peter Sinclair : What, in your experience, is the advantage of having a mentor or mentors?

Joel Christopher : Mentors allow a person to achieve goals and missions faster than would otherwise be possible. What is fascinating is that the larger your list, the easier it is to attract these mentors to you.

Peter Sinclair : Please tell us about that event with Ted. After that I’d like to ask you about your book and what happened at Amazon.com

Joel Christopher : I’m doing a Small Business Success Summit with Ted Nicholas, the four billion dollar man, at the Marriott Hotel in San Francisco. It’s about “how to become a small business millionaire starting from scratch.” I don’t know anybody who is better qualified than Ted Nicholas to do that seminar. He has founded and sold 23 companies in his lifetime and sold more than four billion dollars worth of products and services. You can read more about this at www.smallbizmillionaire.com.

Peter Sinclair : Thanks Joel, now can you explain to us how you used the process of C.O.I.N. (Center of Influence Networking) to get your book “Mining Online Gold With an Offline Shovel” to the top of the Amazon.com best-seller list in only 13 hours?

Joel Christopher : I’d be glad to Peter. What we did was ask for the help of many people to help us get the book to the top of Amazon.com in just one day. We used my circle of influence to make it happen. Just to explain that more fully, in my circle of influence at that time was my list of 110,000 people. We also had big list owners with huge mailing lists who are in my circle of influence. That helped enormously. We must have sent out about half a million emails on March 27 to get the book to the top of Amazon.com.

Peter Sinclair : It was obviously a very targeted campaign.

Joel Christopher : Yes. One key concept to building a massive list and also sell a lot of products is to have a SUPER-list. In other words, a sub-list of people who also have big lists. By accessing their centers of influence, you can reach a lot more people. It all boils down to my relationships with these people. They were willing to help out because at one time or another I’ve helped them out in the past.

Peter Sinclair : It was a remarkable effort!

Joel Christopher : It sure was. In 13 hours we reached the number one position in three Amazon categories and the number two position in the big list. The only book that outsold us was the pre-release of the latest Harry Potter novel. But that was all right. Who could beat the “boy wizard” anyway?

Peter Sinclair : So, give and it shall be given?

Joel Christopher : Yes Peter. We utilized the Law of Reciprocity – give and take.

Peter Sinclair : That’s awesome information. Thank you Joel. Now, getting back to basics, if someone was starting with a database of zero, how would you advise them to build that database? What would be the first steps that would give them a quick-start program for success?

Joel Christopher : The first step would be to TARGET your market using the PIPE principle. You determine your target market according to your Passion, Interest, Past job/experience history and Expertise. Next, you create web-copy to capture the attention of your target market. You do this by writing a benefit statement of your offer. Show people why they would want to be on your list. After that you can start asking people you know personally to get on your list.

Peter Sinclair : Can you explain the reason for that Joel?

Joel Christopher : Sure. When I launched my website and list on January the first, 2000 I had about 40 people – relatives, friends, co-workers, associates on my list. I almost begged them to join (laughing). Who would have though that this small list of 40 would blossom into 150,000+ in only three and a half years?

Peter Sinclair : Is that it? What else did you do?

Joel Christopher : I added an opt-in form on the site, I wrote articles, I gave testimonials, and I gave away e-books for viral marketing. So, in effect, I did everything possible to give people a reason to visit the site and sign up.

Peter Sinclair : What are you working on at the moment Joel?

Joel Christopher : I’m glad you asked that! Dr Joe Vitale and I will be launching a multi-media e-book viral marketing campaign at www.Joe-Joel.com in a few days. It’s the audio e-book version of our tele-seminar last month that generated 1,300 list members in a matter of days. With the viral effect, I foresee building a list of 20,000 in a few months with that project. We’re launching that in the next few days.

Peter Sinclair : I am beginning to see how much work you do with others. Has that been the major launch pad for you? Is association the key?

Joel Christopher : Yes absolutely! Peter, as you know, you can help build a bigger database by working with others – especially the right people. Two, three, four or more heads are better than one. Having your own affiliate program and doing joint ventures with other list owners is a sure way of increasing your own subscriber base. Even my book that became a best seller the day it was published (Mining Online Gold…) was a work in association with another partner.

Peter Sinclair : So Joel how important then is the product when it comes to marketing? In the development of products, how do you identify what your market wants?

Joel Christopher : Ahh… good question! Having input from list members for a target market is absolutely vital. For example, do you know how I came up with my 12-step master-list-builder system?

Peter Sinclair : No, but I am sure our visitors and readers would be as intrigued as me to find out…

Joel Christopher : I did a one-question survey. I asked my list at that time: “What is your biggest problem right now?” About 600 of my 10,000 list at that time responded. Of the 600, about two-thirds asked: “How can I build an opt-in list from scratch?”

Peter Sinclair : Brilliant question! Then you get to solve it. Voila… product!

Joel Christopher : Asking your target market what they want is absolutely essential to your product success. Then I came up with my twelve week coaching tele-seminar which gave birth to my best selling product to date – the masterlistbuilder system. You will notice the product at www.masterlistbuilder.com is actually a transcript of my seventy-minute tele-seminar. In the first hour of its release, as an audio-ebook, it sold 200 copies. It has sold thousands since because I asked my target market what they wanted!

Peter Sinclair : That is great information Joel. Now, can you recommend a tele-seminar company that you’ve found useful and reliable?

Joel Christopher : The one I’m using is Black and White. I’ll give you their number. I’m sorry I just don’t have it with me right now.

Peter Sinclair : I’d be grateful if you would email it to me then I can pass it on to our participants today. Joel, we have time for just one more question…

Joel Christopher : OK Peter. Go ahead.

Peter Sinclair : In your book you quote: “Genius is not a not a matter of doing one thing one hundred percent better than everyone else. It’s a matter of doing one hundred things one percent better than everyone else.” Does this sum up your marketing strategies that has taken you from zero to 130,000 subscribers? Can you expand on this a little?

Joel Christopher : Yes Peter. Many people ask me: “What is the best way to build your list fast?” or “What is the one big secret you have in building a massive list?” Well, I’ve got news for them…there is NO ONE big secret. If there is, it’s the combination of many little things. My friend and mentor Ted Nicholas calls it the “success margin.” I call it “mastery” and mastery is doing the many basic things over and over and over again. It’s not one event. It’s a series of events in a systematic manner. The difference between a mediocre list builder and a master list builder is the consistency of action the masters take to build their lists.

Peter Sinclair :… which we can find in your book, right?

Joel Christopher : Right! You only have to be a small measurable amount better than mediocrity and you’ve got it made!

Peter Sinclair : Thank you Joel. Well that’s all the time we have today. It has been a real honor to spend this time with you and I know for a fact that we have all benefited greatly from the hour you have given us of your precious time. You are AWESOME!

Joel Christopher : Thanks Peter. I enjoyed every minute of this chat. Bye Peter and Ben.

Peter Sinclair : Bye Joel. Thank you.

“THE AWESOME POWER OF INVESTING”

Peter Sinclair : I am really thrilled to welcome John Burley to our LIVE CHAT today….

John Burley : Thank you Peter. It’s my pleasure to be here.

Peter Sinclair : The subject is “THE AWESOME POWER OF INVESTING!” John, I would like to predicate today’s chat with the knowledge that I am going to refer constantly to a very powerful book called “The Richest Man In Babylon.”

John Burley : A marvelous book Peter if I may say so.

Peter Sinclair : Indeed. Just in case our readers are not familiar with this book, it was written by George S. Clason and was first published in 1926. Since that time it has sold millions of copies worldwide. In it he states: “Lo, money is plentiful for those who understand the simple rules of its acquisition.”

John Burley : One of my favorite subjects!

Peter Sinclair : John, I know this book is recommended reading for your students. I think, therefore, that we might follow Clason’s “Seven Cures for the Lean Purse” as our guide today at this LIVE CHAT.

John Burley : Sure.

Peter Sinclair : John, from your own personal experience as someone who was in a position to retire at 32 years of age, what does Clason mean with his number one cure: “Start thy purse to fattening?” Perhaps you could explain it in terms of another quote that he uses: “a part of all you earn is yours to keep” I know that’s a bit of a double-barreled question but it is all related.

John Burley : Peter, it’s actually a very simple idea that is universally powerful. The idea is that you take 10% of your gross income and place it into investments.

Peter Sinclair : What sort of investments?

John Burley : Most people do it in managed funds and things of that nature. This is what I call Level Four investing. Advanced investors, Level Five, radically advance the idea by making much higher rates of return.

Peter Sinclair : This is starting to get very interesting. Please go on John.

John Burley : Peter, these concepts are the ones that put me in a position to retire at age 32.

Peter Sinclair : So how hard is it for someone to become a Level Four investor?

John Burley : Not hard at all. There are seven steps to Level Four financial freedom as outlined in my book “Money Secrets of the Rich.”

Peter Sinclair : Could you just outline those seven steps for us?

John Burley : Certainly. 1 – Pay yourself first (10% of your income) 2 – Reinvest your investment returns 3 – Seek Level Four rates of return (12% plus for the long run) 4 – Know what your money is doing (financial controls) 5 – Automatic money system (This is a five step formula) 5.1 – Automatic investment plan (10%) 5.2 – Charitable giving plan (10%) 5.3 – Debt elimination plan (10%) 5.4 – Debt avoidance lifestyle systems 5.5 – Spend the rest! 6 – Financial competence, intelligence and responsibility 7 – Live debt free.

It is that simple. Tens of thousands of people around the world have done it.

Peter Sinclair : That is excellent John. I have read your book and I know that in the book you go into all these subjects in great detail (If anybody wants more detail please refer to John’s book). In the midst all your investment knowledge I know that you also discuss Clason’s second cure for a lean purse. The second cure is: “control thy expenditures.” This cure focuses on budgeting. I know you have written about the importance of cash flow management in personal finances. How can these two disciplines assist with wealth creation?

John Burley : It’s quite simple Peter. There are basically three ways to improve your financial situation. First – increase your income from work. Second – get a higher rate of return from your investments. Third – reduce your expenses. For most people the third method is far easier, yet few focus on it.

Peter Sinclair : John, I suppose number one is probably within the scope of most but do you have some ideas for two and three?

John Burley : I certainly do. With regard to the second method, either become a prudent Level Four investor (12-15% returns) with risk controls in place, or educate yourself on how to become a Level Five investor and make 25-100% plus on your investments.

Peter Sinclair : How would one make those 25-100% gains John?

John Burley : I do this primarily in real estate.

Peter Sinclair : Could you explain that for us?

John Burley : I sure can. This year we have already acquired over 150 properties in the US alone. They will all make at least 40% returns. Many of them will make well over 100% returns. On the matter of reducing your expenses – you need to watch what you spend your money on. My book provides literally hundreds of simple, easy to use ideas that can reduce the average family’s expenses over 25% without affecting their standard of living. The problem most people have is that they don’t think the small expenses matter so they let $50 slip here, $100 slip there. They do it without consciously thinking about the expenses. The reality is that for most families the small expenses are the only ones they can dramatically reduce.

Peter Sinclair : Just backing that up a bit John. You said 150 properties… now that’s momentum! For the first time investor, how could they build to that?

John Burley : Start like so many others have. Start like I did. Get educated on investing in real estate, then go and buy one property, then another and another etc.

Peter Sinclair : Talking about growth, Einstein speaks of compound interest as being the eighth wonder of the world and more powerful than the atom. Clason’s third cure is: “make thy gold multiply.” How best can we utilize the power of compound interest to do this?

John Burley : Einstein and Clason were perfectly correct. I have strong opinions on this myself. The idea is that rather than letting compound interest work against you through consumer debt, you can start having it work for you by using proven systems to make high rates of return and then re-investing the returns. In that way, the compounding effect can dramatically increase the rate of return.

Peter Sinclair : And these proven systems are readily available?

John Burley : Yes. You can access information from my website at www.johnburley.com.

Peter Sinclair : What can people expect to find on your website John?

John Burley : On www.johnburley.com there are free reports and a Discussion Forum that anyone can join. There is no registration required.

Peter Sinclair : Fantastic. Like I mentioned earlier, you all need to read John’s book “Money Secrets Of The Rich” It truly is AWESOME. In fact, even that doesn’t sum it up.

John Burley : Thanks for those kind words Peter. Believe me it was a tremendous task to produce that book. I should mention that in the US and Canada it is also known as “Automatic Wealth.”

Peter Sinclair : Moving along to Clason’s fourth cure, he states that we should: “guard thy treasures from loss” and in doing so he encourages conservative investing and the pursuit of wise consultation. Can you expand on this?

John Burley : I regard Clason as though he were a Level 4 investor (in respect to rates of return). However, his thinking is quite remarkable. An investor should fully understand what he or she is investing in and use risk controls to reduce potential losses.

Peter Sinclair : Like stop-losses in shares?

John Burley : Precisely. I never invest in anything without an exit strategy and a plan for what I am going to do with the investment. People need to understand that Level Five investors can also make substantial profits on the purchase, not necessarily the sale.

Peter Sinclair : John, you have already mentioned that you are heavily into real estate investing, do you have any experience with covered calls?

John Burley : Covered calls? Yes, I have used them frequently. They can add to the income factor and serve as insurance on your investment. However of late, most of my investment time has, in fact, been in real estate.

Peter Sinclair : Would that be because of the state of the share market?

John Burley : No, a Level Five investor can make money in any market. The reason, for me is it is so much easier in real estate. We make over 40% on every transaction, with long term cash flow and locked in capital gains. I am much more “in-love” with real estate deals. That’s just a personal position, not a judgment.

Peter Sinclair : 40% is certainly a great return. So up, down, sideways, it doesn’t matter to a Level Five investor?

John Burley : If a person truly is a Level Five investor, it doesn’t matter. In fact Level Five investors prefer a bad market to a good one. There is so much more opportunity because all the Level Three investors are scared to death. They are all in the process of selling low after, of course having bought high!

Peter Sinclair : Would you say it all comes back to education?

John Burley : Yes, Peter, it really does come back to education. There are two ways to get that education – the hard way in the street, or the easy way from people who have already done it and are doing it now.

Peter Sinclair : John, this is fabulous information that you are sharing with us. We still have three of George Classon’s “cures” to go. He says: “make of thy dwelling a profitable investment.” That is his fifth cure. Is the ownership of your home with in-built equity, a necessary pre-requisite for wealth production or are their other ways?

John Burley : Peter, this is one that I don’t agree with in that I do not consider one’s personal residence to be an investment because I regard it as an expense not an income source. Your home, is just that – your home. It is a function of the lifestyle you want and not a true investment, in my opinion. With that said, we own a lovely home (free and clear of debt, of course).

Peter Sinclair : Liability versus asset as Robert Kiyosaki teaches?

John Burley : Yes, our good friend Keith Cunningham explained it very clearly to us in 1991-2.

Peter Sinclair : Moving right along John – “insure a future income” is the sixth cure. What are some of the ways that we can safely insure the security of an ongoing future income?

John Burley : One is income protection insurance. Another is to create assets that can later be turned into cash flow. A third insurance is to create assets that create cash flow NOW! This is by far my favorite way to insure lifetime income.

Peter Sinclair : Clason’s seventh and last cure for a lean purse is: “increase thy ability to earn.” What are the best ways to expand our financial intelligence and competence John?

John Burley : Like I have said before, education is the key. Learn from those who have already done it and then go out and DO it yourself!

Peter Sinclair : No doubt that is what you have done. Can you tell us to what extent you have gone with this education?

John Burley : I personally have spent over US$500,000 on books, tapes, videos and seminars. And that in my opinion is why we have experienced such financial success.

Peter Sinclair : John, I love the story about the 18 year old girl whom you encouraged to put away $100 a month. Can you share that story with our readers? I must say, it spoke volumes to me, particularly as I assist my own children in these matters.

John Burley : Yes. You refer, of course, to my friend Tiffany. She is 24 now, married and a mommy. She used to work for us part-time. One day she came to me and told me she wanted to be rich. I told her okay. I said: “if you want to be wealthy, Tiffany, you will have to put $100 a month away.” At the time she was making around $400 a month.

Peter Sinclair : How did she react to that advice?

John Burley : She said she couldn’t afford it. She said that she wanted to be able to buy more CD’s etc.

Peter Sinclair : So what was your advice to her after she said that?

John Burley : I told her bluntly. I said: “fine, then stay poor forever and don’t ask for any more (free) advice unless you are going to do what I say.” She thought it over and decided to get started…

Peter Sinclair : So, everything went smoothly from that point?

John Burley : Not exactly… several months later she wanted to stop. She told me that she wanted to withdraw some of the money to go on vacation. She asked if she could have it back.

Peter Sinclair : What did you tell her in response to that?

John Burley : I told her no. I told her that a deal was a deal. She had to put in the money and I would help her to invest it. She was angry with me for months. A year later she thanked me and to this day, every time I see her, she thanks me for getting her started. She really is a lovely lady and her baby is great. Tiffany still does her AIP.

Peter Sinclair : And AIP stands for?

John Burley : Sorry, AIP stands for “Automatic Investment Plan.”

Peter Sinclair : As we draw this LIVE CHAT to a close John, our friend George Clason also states in the “Richest Man in Babylon” that: “men and women of action are favoured.” That is not one of his seven cures but it sure seems like sound advice to me. Is that what you have found with reference to investing?

John Burley : Absolutely! You don’t get rich on the sidelines.

Peter Sinclair : John, can you reiterate what action potential investors should take to start on their own paths of wealth procurement?

John Burley : The very first thing, before anything else, is to get educated. From there you should follow the general principles of investing. After that you can establish your own rules and get into the game.

Peter Sinclair : Well, John, this hour spent with you has gone so fast – but what a powerful hour it has been. I really want to thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas so openly with all the people who have attended this live chat today. There is so much powerful information here!

John Burley : Thanks Peter. I had a great time. It was a really fun discussion for me. We will have to do it again sometime.

Peter Sinclair : Have a fantastic evening John! Thanks so much for your time and wisdom. See you later mate!

John Burley : Good on you Peter. Keep up the education and helping others. Good investing to you and all the people on the LIVE CHAT and those who will read the edited version later on.

“THE AWESOME POWER OF NETWORKING”

Peter Sinclair : Hi Bob, I just want to welcome you formally to our live chat today.

Bob Burg : Hello Peter. It’s a pleasure to be here.

Peter Sinclair : OK Bob, let’s get straight into it. Four decades ago a concept called “six degrees of separation” was announced. That concept stated that all of us, through our social networks, are within 5 or 6 connections with anyone else on the planet. I thought it was a pretty powerful statement Bob. How would that fact impact the power of networking as you know it?

Bob Burg : Peter, in my opinion, it pretty much shows that he or she who masters the art of building relationships is many, many steps ahead of the game.

Peter Sinclair : So is networking just about building relationships?

Bob Burg : Networking will always be about people and not about things. No matter how good the things. It is not “just” about building relationships, as you said, but without the relationships nothing else happens.

Peter Sinclair : So if you were asked to define networking what would you write?

Bob Burg : I define “networking” as the cultivating of mutually beneficial give and take, win/win relationships. The emphasis is on giving. The “super networkers” who are the most successful networkers tend to be the biggest givers.

Peter Sinclair : So, with that in mind, is giving the only quality you’d suggest we develop to become more effective networkers?

Bob Burg : No, not at all. It just happens to be one quality of a successful networker.

Peter Sinclair : Bob would you please expand on that?

Bob Burg : Sure Peter. What a networker does is constantly reach out and develop “mutually beneficial,” give and take, win/win relationships with people. They do it on a continual basis. The successful networker does this by planting seeds wherever he or she goes. In essence, they are following an intelligent, workable, proven “system” for networking success.

Peter Sinclair : You just mentioned a “system.” Can you elaborate a bit more on that system?

Bob Burg : I recently heard someone discuss the power of systems by saying that systems permit ordinary people to achieve extraordinary results, predictably. However, without a system even extraordinary people find it difficult to achieve even ordinary results, with predictability.

Peter Sinclair : So through your years of experience what system have you put in place to become a more effective networker?

Bob Burg : Peter, allow me to give you an example. McDonald’s isn’t as successful as it is because it has the best hamburgers. It is successful because it has a proven system for success. Any franchisee can use that system, even if they had no prior experience in the restaurant business.

Peter Sinclair : Bob, how would the average person acquire such a system?

Bob Burg : I would suggest people begin by realizing certain basics regarding networking. To me, the “Golden Rule” of networking is this: All things being equal, people will do business with, and refer business to, those people they know, like and trust. It all comes down to that. Having understood that, the networker should have a goal. That goal is to establish, develop and cultivate trusting relationships with people. This creates an environment whereby people feel so good about the networker that they want to see that person do well. They want to be a source of referrals for that person.

Peter Sinclair : You are speaking about integrity?

Bob Burg : Sure. Integrity has much to do with it because you MUST be the same person you are projecting. If not, the phoniness will eventually come back to haunt you. How many times have we seen that happen? A smooth talking person builds their business like a “house of cards” and eventually it all comes tumbling down. That often happens because the integrity just wasn’t there.

Peter Sinclair : Bob, can I get right back to basics for a minute?

Bob Burg : Sure. Go right ahead.

Peter Sinclair : How would you advise someone who is starting out in a new career or a new business? How would you advise them to start networking?

Bob Burg : I’d advise them to begin building their network now. The next thing I would tell them would be to realize that every person you meet knows about 250 other people. Thus, every time you build a relationship with one new person, where that person knows you, likes you, trusts you, wants to see you succeed and wants to help you find new business, you’ve just increased your personal sphere of influence by about 250 potential people. This happens every single time!

Peter Sinclair : Where would you start?

Bob Burg : Begin by going to places where you will find people that you want to meet. This could include almost anywhere you can think of. Businesses and social functions are great places to start. Of course, if you have a particular niche market that you target, you can aim for there. The big thing is in knowing how to relate to someone, once you meet him or her.

Peter Sinclair : In your wonderful book “Endless Referrals” you write about networking etiquette. Can you tell us more about that?

Bob Burg : Sure. Perhaps it would be best if I gave another example. Let’s say, for instance, that you see a person who you have heard is a true “center of influence.” He or she knows a lot of people and has a great reputation. I would recommend that you introduce yourself to that person in an unassuming, humble manner. Let them see that there is no pressure.

Peter Sinclair : How do you recommend starting up such a conversation?

Bob Burg : Peter, the best thing to do is to ask that person questions about themself and their business. After all, that’s what they’re most interested in… at least for now. This way, there is no pressure on you or that person. I suggest asking what I call “feel-good” questions.

Peter Sinclair : So you’re looking to give rather than to receive, listen rather than speak?

Bob Burg : Precisely!

Peter Sinclair : Can you give us examples of some of the questions you use?

Bob Burg : These are questions that are totally non-threatening and simply make that person feel good about themselves, the conversation, and you. It’s a great way to build the initial rapport. Let’s go through a couple of them right now. The first question I’ll often ask is: “How did you get started in your business? This question is very effective because it gives the person “permission” to “tell their story.” Practically everyone loves to do this. Strangely enough, very few people are ever asked such a question. So, here is you, this person they just met a minute ago, asking them such a nice, feel good question.

Peter Sinclair : The most important word in the dictionary is ‘me,’ I guess?

Bob Burg : Yes Peter. Pretty much to everyone, that word, “me,” is about the most important. It’s one of those “human nature” things taught so well by Dale Carnegie.

Peter Sinclair : Sorry Bob, I interrupted your answer. You were giving examples of “feel good” questions. What would be some of the other questions you would ask?

Bob Burg : The next question I will usually ask is: “What do you enjoy most about what you do?” This is a truly “feel good” question. It elicits a feel good, positive response. What’s interesting, Peter, is that, in a sense, this question is contrary to what a lot of sales people are generally taught. So often they are taught to find the pain of their prospect. Sales people are taught this so that they can cure it with their great products or services. I have found that there are a couple of challenges with that approach…

Peter Sinclair : I think we are getting into a really interesting area here Bob. There will be so many sales people who will benefit from a new approach to selling. What are the difficulties that you see with traditional sales approaches?

Bob Burg : One is that the person is not yet ready to share that kind of information with you. You just met. The rapport has not yet been properly established. Also, even if you were never to do business with that person, so what? The key is that he or she knows 250 other people that they might be able to refer you to. So, instead of going “in for the kill,” just establish the rapport and make that person feel good about themself. In other words, instead of finding his or her pain, find their joy. Now, let’s say that, after these first two questions, you can tell that a real rapport is being developed… That would be the time to ask, what I call, the “One Key Question.” That question will set you apart from the rest.

Peter Sinclair : And what’s that Bob?

Bob Burg : That question is: “Peter, how can I know if someone I’m speaking to would be a good prospect for you?” This is a very effective question for two reasons. First, you have shown again that you are interested in “him.” Very few others are. Second, you’ve basically asked him to help advise you on how to help him find new business. Most people tend to appreciate that.

Peter Sinclair : That’s fantastic advice Bob. Recently, I read a quote by Cavett Robert that said: “You have to make contacts to get contracts.” How true is that?

Bob Burg : Excellent. Cavett was a great man. He was a truly nice, generous, human being. He also said: “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” That makes for a good “sales” trivial pursuit question.

Peter Sinclair : I’d be willing to play that game with you Bob. Now, can I talk to you on how one can develop a million-dollar “rolodex?” What strategy should one put in place to develop that?

Bob Burg : Great question. You do it one person at a time. Then you will start seeing the exponential multiplication. One great way is to put people together. Be, what I call, a connector of people. For instance, two of the guests I know you had on recently are two of the best at that technique that I know. I speak, of course, of Josh Hinds and Mike Litman. Both of them have built huge, successful, profitable networks by being wonderful connectors of others. Their ability is in setting good people up with other good people.

Peter Sinclair : Yes, I must admit, they are both very adept in this area.

Bob Burg : They are an information resource. They are continually providing value to others! A great book I recommend regarding this is entitled “Love is the Killer App” by Tim Sanders. This book takes networking to a whole new level. It’s an awesome book.

Peter Sinclair : Now Bob, it’s one thing to develop a large network but how does one maintain it?

Bob Burg : We maintain it by continually nurturing it. By that I mean nothing more than, in a sense, providing great “service after the sale.” This can be achieved by letting people know you’re thinking of them, continuing to connect with them and connecting them with others. Also, as we were discussing earlier, having the personal integrity to earn their like and trust in you. Keeping that trust is of prime importance.

Peter Sinclair : How can that best be achieved?

Bob Burg : What’s great, of course, is that we have so many new media with which to keep in touch. It’s now so much easier than it ever used to be. The internet has revolutionized the art of keeping in touch. However, we must always keep in mind that a tool such as the internet is just that. It’s just a tool and never a replacement. High tech must always be outdone by high touch.

Peter Sinclair : Bob, I recently came across the concept of the power of leveraging in developing networks. One of the suggestions was to network the networks. Are you able to enlighten us on what that means?

Bob Burg : That’s an excellent question…

Peter Sinclair : Go for it Bob!

Bob Burg : It was brought up in the excellent book called “The One Minute Millionaire” by Mark Victor Hansen and Robert G. Allen. Networking the “center of influence” of a particular network is like taking the “one person knows 250 people” concept and multiplying that exponentially over and over again. Imagine cultivating a relationship of the “know you, like you, trust you” variety with someone who has a huge list of loyal customers. That cuts down the “prospecting time” immeasurably, which is a wonderful idea. Of course, the concept itself has been around for ages. That’s what a “center of influence” is – someone who can connect you with a ton of people. You can be very effective with that “borrowed credibility.” On the Internet, it just sort of turbo-charges the potential numbers you can reach quickly.

Peter Sinclair : But as you wrote before, “high tech must be outdone by high touch.” That is such a powerful concept. Can you say more about this?

Bob Burg : Sure. We must never forget that all-important concept. People do not do business with computers. They do business with “people.” They will only do business with people they know, like and trust. So, above all else, we must always be human beings connecting with other human beings. It’s really as simple as that. However, that simplicity often gets lost in what I call the “internet shuffle” which we are seeing more and more of.

Peter Sinclair : The “internet shuffle?” What do you mean by that Bob?

Bob Burg : The “internet shuffle” – the tendency to believe that if you can somehow utilize all the technology possible then you’ll somehow create a lot of business. And we know that usually this just doesn’t work.

Peter Sinclair : Thanks Bob. Now, there is one word that I would like to discuss with you. That word is “positioning.” How do you do it and how important is it?

Bob Burg : In a sense, positioning is “everything.” I think Reis and Trout, the co-authors of the book “Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind” described it perfectly. They basically said that people have this tiny area in their mind for your particular product or service. So, what is it that you do that says: “Hey, I’m the only person who sells this or that who you should be buying from or referring to?”

Peter Sinclair : Can you give us an example?

Bob Burg : Take, for instance, a jar of peanut butter on the shelf at the grocery store. Just getting that jar of peanut butter onto the shelf is difficult. The next consideration, before any sale is made, is the fact that the jar has to stand out from all the other brands that are also sitting on that shelf. Somehow and in some way that jar has to say: “take me! take me!” Of course, that’s a whole new session in itself. Maybe you can get Reis or Trout to come on and speak about that.

Peter Sinclair : I’ll talk to you about that later Bob, if I may. So, it’s establishing yourself as the expert in your chosen field?

Bob Burg : Yes. Most definitely. That is so important. And, depending upon your field, there are various ways of doing this.

Peter Sinclair : OK. Bob we are just about out of time; I’d like to ask you just one more question.

Bob Burg : Go right ahead.

Peter Sinclair : If there were one piece of advice that you could give our readers on the subject of prospecting, what would it be? The reason I ask is that prospecting terrifies a lot of people. Can it be turned into a fun event that will add value to our lives and the lives of others?

Bob Burg : That’s a very interesting and important question. The whole idea of the concept I teach is to be able to have fun. The key here is that when you put the other person first, it takes the pressure off you. Pressure-free prospecting is definitely fun.

Peter Sinclair : So your advice is to put the other person’s interests and values first?

Richard Duszczak ( www.cartoonmotivators.com ),

Bryan Hall ( www.BryanHall.net ) and

The chat was scheduled for one hour and the subject was:

“THE AWESOME POWER OF GOAL SETTING”

Gary Simpson : Hi all. I’m ready to go.

Peter Sinclair : Richard, Bryan and Gary. In your own words, what would you say a goal is?

Richard Duszczak : Hi Peter, my idea of a goal is something to aim for which presently seems out of reach. It is something that will keep us moving forward.

Bryan Hall : I would say a goal is a level of achievement we strive for. Something we wish to attain, backed with intention.

Gary Simpson : To answer the question, I’d say it is something you aspire to.

Peter Sinclair : What is so important about goal setting? Is it really necessary? Or is it just a lot of hype that keeps us motivational speakers paid?

Gary Simpson : Having goals will prevent you from being one of life’s drifters or what I call a “gunner”. “One day I’m gunner do this and I’m gunner do that.”

Bryan Hall : It’s absolutely necessary. We need them to have a sense of direction, for one thing. If it keeps you paid, that’s probably an achievement of one of your own goals, Peter.

Peter Sinclair : So Gary, when you set a goal, how do you go about it?

Gary Simpson : I usually write things down. I’m a big writer. When I have it on paper it becomes real.

Peter Sinclair : And Bryan, do you have a particular method that has helped you in the area of personal goal setting?

Bryan Hall : I lean towards writing things down, too. I’ve been an aspiring writer since before I could walk, I think. I decided in the second grade that’s what I would be. Writing things down and visualizing myself having already achieved that goal. There’s a lot of power in writing it down. Visualization then acts as reinforcement.

Peter Sinclair : Richard, from talking to you in the past I know you had to overcome a lot to become a motivational cartoonist. How did goal setting help you? Do you have any tricks that you can share?

Richard Duszczak : I write out goals and illustrate them with simple little cartoon drawings. I am a visual man, I suppose.

Peter Sinclair : Gary, what is the difference between having goals in your mind and writing them down?

Gary Simpson : It is so easy to forget things. We are all so busy these days. Putting it in writing is like a promise to myself. I don’t break promises, so when it is on paper it is set in stone, so to speak.

Peter Sinclair : Is it really that necessary Gary?

Gary Simpson : In my opinion, yes.

Peter Sinclair : Richard, just getting back to your previous answer, you’re an artist. How do us humble writers create pictures for ourselves?

Richard Duszczak : Peter, I draw little stick figures! Sometimes, I cut out photos. I did that with the BMW I always wanted. And I did get it eventually! I visualized myself driving that car!

Peter Sinclair : Gary, when you write your goals down, what are the main features of a goal that empowers you to pursue it?

Gary Simpson : I write in the active voice and I ascribe a date to it. I have goals for all sorts of things. My little pet at the moment is building my website. I am committed to doing something to enhance it every day. I have not missed a single day in 106 consecutive days. No exception. No break. No holiday.

Peter Sinclair : Gary, can you elaborate what you mean by active voice. Could you give us an example?

Gary Simpson : Sure Peter. The moon was jumped over by the cow is passive voice. The cow jumped over the moon is active voice. Action!

Peter Sinclair : Bryan, you’re a coach, how do you instruct your clients when it comes to setting goals?

Bryan Hall : Typically, I dig deep enough to find what it is they truly want to achieve. From there, a lot of it is based on intuition, visualization, etc.

Peter Sinclair : Hey Richard, getting back to what you said about stick figures, a stick drawing of a BMW would look interesting!

Richard Duszczak : Mmm! I don’t think a stick figure of a BMW would motivate you to want one! So I recommend that you cut a picture of your dream car from a magazine and have this as a goal. Peter, I suppose my method is a bit like goal-mapping.

Peter Sinclair : Goal mapping Richard. Hmm, that’s a new one to me. Can you explain in a little more detail the idea behind this?

Richard Duszczak : I have my main goal in the centre with smaller goals branching off, but all connected in some way.

Peter Sinclair : But is it important to put a date with your goals when you draw them?

Richard Duszczak : I definitely put dates on smaller short term goals. But it’s harder to put an exact date on when I will complete my major goal. Remember, it’s not the end of the world if you have to move the date forward on your ultimate goal!

Peter Sinclair : Bryan, I had someone ask me today how they should find their passion? That would have a lot to do with goal setting. How would you advise on this?

Bryan Hall : Peter, I think finding your passion is based very much in the deeper things – spiritually speaking. It’s more intuitive than anything else, in my opinion.

Peter Sinclair : But how do we find our individual passion?

Bryan Hall : Many people don’t find their passion. They’re cluttered and covered and buried by the world. But it isn’t hard to find it, either. You have to dig and realize what you love to do.

Peter Sinclair : That’s fantastic Bryan. I really believe that you have hit the nail on the head when you say that!

Bryan Hall : Thanks Peter.

Peter Sinclair : Would you have a strategy to help people to find what they love to do?

Bryan Hall : You know, a lot of it, for me and in my work, is just getting to know the person, really. You have to get into their hearts – especially if they need guidance to do so themselves.

Peter Sinclair : Thanks Bryan. So Gary, when it comes to goal setting, how important is action?

Gary Simpson : Peter, I believe action begets action. Doing something gives you more energy to keep going.

Peter Sinclair : So for someone who has hit a roadblock – how would you advise them to get kick started again with respect to goal setting, Gary?

Gary Simpson : It’s like writer’s block. To overcome it – just write. Write anything. Do something. There is nothing worse than idleness to make you even more idle.

Richard Duszczak : Gary, I agree on the writer’s block thing. In my line of work I just tend to start doodling to get me in the mood. You might be interested to know that my initial passion was to be a sculptor which my school teacher said I was very good at. Maybe he was a motivational expert?

Peter Sinclair : The power of doodling Richard. Can you explain how that helps?

Richard Duszczak : Peter, Everybody loves to doodle, don’t they? It’s relaxing, and what happens when you relax? You get ideas! I leave something half finished at the end of the day. A half-drawn cartoon, a half-finished paragraph! This helps me to get back into the swing.

Peter Sinclair : Bryan, are you into short-term or long-term goals? And is there an importance in defining the two?

Bryan Hall : Absolutely an importance. And I think you have to utilize both.

Peter Sinclair : Richard, you mentioned a few moments ago that you wanted to be a sculptor. How did your passion for sculpting get transferred into cartoons?

Richard Duszczak : Good question Peter. Well everyone I knew said I’d never make a living at that, so I had to try something else. At that point in my life I had no idea of goal setting or maybe I wouldn’t have given up so easy!

Peter Sinclair : Gary, if someone has hit a road block in their life, how do they refocus and start over?

Gary Simpson : If you miss a goal you just reset the date. Achieve it a bit later. Better later than never. Just keep hammering away. Keep going for it. Bryan Hall : I agree with that, too, Gary. Do something! Action affirms your direction and your belief in yourself. If you don’t have that, then goals are nearly pointless.

Peter Sinclair : What would you say to those who have set goals and yet have not achieved them in a reasonable timeframe?

Bryan Hall : Well, what’s considered reasonable by someone may not always be so realistic as it needs to be in achieving those goals. Try breaking them down into shorter term goals and keep moving forward.

Peter Sinclair : So writing goals only is not enough?

Bryan Hall : The focus has to be on the forward motion. Action. Do something and believe in yourself.

Richard Duszczak : Bryan and Gary, I totally agree with what you guys have said. You’ve got to keep going. If you get knocked down get back up.

Bryan Hall : Exactly, Richard! And I think people get too wrapped up in those dates, too. It’s more seeing the gifts you have in your life and focusing on your true ability to achieve those goals. Just my opinion.

Gary Simpson : “I get knocked down, but I get up again…” Remember that song?

Richard Duszczak : I can’t remember the number of times editors told me my work was rubbish. I took it as constructive criticism and worked at my style and sent them more and more stuff until they published it!

Ben Sinclair : I love your cartoons Richard!

Peter Sinclair : So persistence is the key Richard…more than anything else?

Gary Simpson : Richard, when people say that, you should wear it as a badge of honor. You too, Peter. I read your comments on your website about getting knocked back by all those editors.

Peter Sinclair : So the million dollar question is… how many goals should I have?

Richard Duszczak : Peter, I had one main goal – to become a successful cartoonist. I also had lots of little goals – like being published in a variety of magazines.

Gary Simpson : That’s what I do too Richard. I have little measuring sticks along the way – to monitor my progress.

Peter Sinclair : Can you explain the measuring stick idea Gary?

Gary Simpson : Sure Peter. They’re little indicators. Things to check your journey. It’s a bit like road mapping. You go to town A, then town B and town C and so on. Eventually you reach town Z, which, of course, is your final destination.

Peter Sinclair : So Gary is that like what I heard someone once say – how do you eat an elephant? One small piece at a time?

Gary Simpson : Only if you like eating elephants! Personally, I’d rather ride on one.

Richard Duszczak : Gary and Peter, I have to say that I agree totally!

Peter Sinclair : How do you know that a goal is a real goal? Is there a time limit that one should give? What if a goal is just not happening? What is a reasonable timeframe? Do you want to answer this one Richard?

Richard Duszczak : I never had any certain time limits, first I just wanted to make a living. Then I started to improve on this.

Peter Sinclair : So while you are alive your goals could come to pass hey Richard? How can success evade someone with that sort of determination? I suppose there is another thing I would like to ask. How important is accountability when it comes to goal setting and who should we be accountable to? Bryan, perhaps you would like to take the lead on this question.

Bryan Hall : Accountability? I believe we are accountable to ourselves, and to God.

Peter Sinclair : I am really having a blast! You guys are really giving some great ideas about goal setting, action, indicators, persistence. Gary, would you like to add anything to what Bryan said?

Gary Simpson : The only person that matters is yourself. Your goals are personal. It is a contract with yourself. I often make a pledge and sign it.

Bryan Hall : That’s awesome, Gary! I agree with you there.

Richard Duszczak : Gary – pledge and sign it! Now that’s a good idea.

Peter Sinclair : So it’s about commitment?

Gary Simpson : I believe in total commitment!

Peter Sinclair : There is power in the signature – just like signing a cheque (check). Now that’s commitment.

Gary Simpson : Bryan and Richard, I’m really solid on signing things. It’s my word to myself.

Bryan Hall : Yes, Peter. Commitment is probably the number one key in setting goals. Gary makes an excellent point here.

Gary Simpson : Thanks Bryan. I am in very good company this evening with you guys!

Peter Sinclair : So in order to write goals and then apply action to those goals and then pursue them it takes a whole lot of courage. How would you encourage people to tap into that inner courage to do what 95% of the populous don’t do. Most people don’t write goals.

Bryan Hall : Peter, I believe the key to that is bringing people to believe in themselves. I truly believe this.

Richard Duszczak : Maybe children should be encouraged to write goals at school by their teachers!

Gary Simpson : That’s a good point Richard. I would also like to mention goal cards. I’m going to send you guys some that I have had printed for my website.

Peter Sinclair : Thank you Gary. Any tools to assist would be great.

Bryan Hall : That was a most excellent point you made Richard – about school children! There certainly isn’t enough of that going on in the classrooms. And thank you, Gary, those goal cards sound awesome!

Richard Duszczak : Gary, I really like your idea of goal cards. I have a business card in my wallet that describes me as the World’s Greatest Cartoonist! On it there are contact details and everything! I can’t miss seeing it every time I open my wallet.

Gary Simpson : Richard, are they the cards I sent you a while back?

Richard Duszczak : Yes, Gary, it was one of your goal cards that gave me the idea!

Gary Simpson : Excellent Richard. I am very honored that it has assisted you! Bryan, send me an email with your street address and I will send you some goal cards. Peter and Ben, I already know where you guys are. I’ll get ‘em off to you next week.

Bryan Hall : Excellent, my friend! I can’t wait! Thank you!

Peter Sinclair : I believe that without a vision the people perish. What do you think Gary?

Gary Simpson : I think a person can get mighty miserable without goals. They think their life is going nowhere – and basically I guess it is.

Bryan Hall : Life is always going somewhere, Gary. It’s when we know where it’s going and where we want it to go that makes a difference. You’re right, Peter – you have to have a vision.

Peter Sinclair : Without a goal you’ll end up in a hole, or is that, a whole lot of trouble?

Richard Duszczak : I certainly had a period recently (for a few years, in fact) where I’d stopped growing, but now I’m back on track with a big goal!

Peter Sinclair : And a guy with a big goal will live a big life. You’ve certainly inspired me tonight Richard.

Melissa (forum observer) : Yes, it’s been very inspiring!

Peter Sinclair : I suppose that is why it is so great to be in the company of such winners as yourselves. We have the privilege to teach other the art of goal setting and achievement. It really is a privilege and an honor to be speaking with you all tonight. OK. It’s time to wrap up our hour, but before we do that, Richard, could you just leave us one final thought about goal setting. Then I’ll ask Gary and then Bryan.

Richard Duszczak : Thanks Peter. First, find something you love to do and that you’re passionate about, then give it 110%!

Peter Sinclair : Richard, that advice was brilliant. Thank you so much.

Richard Duszczak : It’s 2:00pm here in the UK and my lovely wife says it’s now time to go and do some Christmas shopping! This has been great. Let’s do it again!

Peter Sinclair : Thanks Richard. It’s been an absolute pleasure. I will talk to you again this week. Now Gary. Let’s have your final thoughts.

Gary Simpson : Thanks Peter. I’d like to quote some words from my book, in fact. You may be miserable or listless if : 1 – something is preventing you from moving towards a goal, 2 – you have just reached a goal and do not have another goal to shoot for, or 3 – you don’t have goals. Is there anything that you are doing that is taking you away from any of your goals? If so, why are you doing it? Finally, if you do not currently have a goal or goals, make it your goal to find a goal!

Peter Sinclair : Thanks Gary. And Bryan, your final thoughts on goal setting?

Bryan Hall : Maybe a quote here from Gandhi would be appropriate. “You must BE the change you wish to see in the world.”

Ben Sinclair : Merry Christmas Richard, Gary and Bryan and everyone else sitting in on this discussion chat line.

Bryan Hall : Thanks, Ben! And, yes, Richard and Gary and Peter – it’s been AWESOME! Thank You!

Peter Sinclair : Well I think we’ll wrap it up here. If there is anyone with questions they’d like to ask I will be online to help. Also feel free to ask the other fantastic participants.

Gary Simpson : My thanks to all you guys. I really enjoyed this.

Peter Sinclair : We have certainly heard many wise words from my friends.

Bryan Hall : Thank you Peter! Excellence, as always!

Peter Sinclair : Well, we will officially end this chat forum. But I will stick around if anyone has further questions. Thanks guys. I will talk to you all further this week. You’re the BEST!

Bryan Hall : Thank you again Peter. It’s been a GREAT pleasure and an honor. Thanks to Richard and Gary, too! You guy did an awesome job!

Peter Sinclair : I just thought I would let everybody know that I’m going to print off this chat. There is so much in it. OK. With that I will close the forum. Thanks again Gary, Bryan, Richard and Ben.
